First discovered by the ancient Mayan and Aztec civilizations thousands of years ago, cacao tea is brewed from the husks or shells of cacao beans after being dried and roasted. Cacao tea provides a delicate boost in energy and increased mental focus without the harsh effects of caffeine, making it the best alternative for coffee. It is also completely sugar-free, caffeine-free, gluten-free and dairy-free.

In addition to the health benefits the tea is believed to have, cacao husk tea is also environmentally friendly. With the cacao husks having traditionally been considered a waste by-product of chocolate making and other cacao products, the use of it as the primary ingredient in tea turns it into a sustainable and highly rated product.

What Does It Taste Like?

Cacao tea has a natural sweetness, a heavenly chocolate taste and aroma. It is a way to enjoy cacao in an entirely new way.

How Is It Used?

You can try cacao tea as you would any other herbal tea; Place a few teaspoons in a cup, brew with hot water and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes.

HEALTH & NUTRITION

Studies have shown that during the process of cacao beans fermentation, a high percentage of valuable compounds migrates from the beans to cacao husks; such as:

  • Theobromine:  A caffeine alternative that helps boost your mood and get better sleep, as well as lower blood sugar.
  • Flavanoids: Have beneficial anti-inflammatory effects and they protect your cells from oxidative damage.

COOKING & PREPARATION

You can try cacao tea as you would any other herbal tea; Place a few teaspoons in a cup, brew with hot water and leave to infuse for 5-10 minutes.  Or you can make “hot cocoa” with your cacao tea by adding in some coconut milk, a teaspoon of honey, and a dash of cinnamon.

It’s also possible to turn it into a chocolate iced tea, brew it up as normal and pop it in the fridge we do suggest a sweetener though as it does go bitter gradually.
