Peppercorns

Peppercorns are the most traded spice around the world. They are berries that grow on Piper Nigrum, a flowering vine in the family Piperaceae.

  • Black Pepper (King of Spices): Black Pepper is the most important and widely consumed spice in the world., accounting for 20% of the world trade in spices. Pepper is valued for its pungency contributed by the alkaloid piperine and flavor contributed by the volatile oil.
  • Pink Pepper: Pink peppercorns aren't actually a peppercorn! They are dried berries of the plant Schinus molle; however, they are similar to peppercorns in shape and flavour.
  • Wild Pepper (Voatsiperifery): This rare and little known pepper is hand harvested only once a year and comes from the seed of fruit that only grows on young, recently grown shoots of the vine. The pepper must be hand-harvested via ladders that reach up to 20 meters into the rainforest's heights - giving it the nickname "pepper of the peaks."
